An Ode to 2020 ♡

tldr; i realize 2020 was the worst, but despite everything I did so so much

ps - it was a friggin pandemic. if you were nice to yourself this year, that's enough

In April I started this list of things I accomplished during quarantine, something I abandoned updating probably two weeks later. Here's that and then some (not chronologically ordered):

  • Created new cocktails with random alcohols and asking Google Home

  • Had a virtual picnic with Corinne

  • Had countless hours of zoom calls and Google Hangouts with Corinne and Nicole where we got extremely drunk, watched 2000s movies, and it was the best form of therapy (also probably the closest we've ever been tbh)

  • Recreated the phone call scene in Mean Girls with Corinne, Nicole and Montana

  • Started embroidering my tattoos on a sweatshirt

  • Learned the Super Trouper dance from Mamma Mia

  • Cut my faux bangs (from INH hair)

  • Drank and ate lots (lots of baking: cookies, brownies, pretzels, bread)

  • Lots of movies / tv / Netflix (binged Grey's Anatomy in its entirety in less than 5 months)

  • Had Netflix/Disney+ watch parties and movie nights with Emily H. for Too Hot to Handle with drinking rules; Halloween movies; Bridge to Terabithia for both of our first time; Love Island; Indian Matchmaker, etc.

  • Tried shotgunning for the first time (better at it when it’s not carbonated) PS don't do it with wine

  • Made a fort with my bedsheets between my bed and my dresser for myself (watched Toy Story) and downloaded all my old photos off of MySpace (put on facebook)

  • Sent care packages/letters to Corinne, Nicole and Emily F for their birthdays (WE'RE ALL TWENTY FUCKING FIVE NOW!)

  • Uploaded some youtube videos: Corona Cruise since covid cancelled my cruise in May, and made a Graduation video for my sister's high school (SHE'S 18 AND GRADUATED NOW OMG???)

  • Learned how to use self tanner with a mitt plus did some actual tanning

  • Did a bunch of face masks and learned new ways to do my hair (heatless curls with robe tie) thanks to tiktok (follow me!)

  • Switched out my spring/winter wardrobes

  • Cleaned, organized, and rearranged my entire room; Got a brand new mattress and a new duvet cover

  • Played rummoli with mom and Tana then roasted marshmallows

  • Adopted Peewee <3

  • Had a record number of job interviews this year, and was offered jobs three times (and learned it's okay to say no)

  • Landed my first legitimate long-term marketing client Mary

  • Was ballsy enough to start this blog

  • Cut my hair, dyed it blonde and then pink and then brown

  • Simultaneously worked as little (4 months of being laid off due to covid) and as much as I humanly could (working two jobs for the last two months of the year with almost no time off)

  • Got a new phone (secondhand) just before covid hit

  • Somehow managed to save so much money (which is fucking huge for me because that means I'm making enough money this year that I can afford to put some away)

  • Dated some guys despite covid and also managed to get too attached to one and got my heart broken in a month and a half, and also learned how to process and get over it

  • Witnessed the historical election where Trump lost to Biden and Harris

  • Worked 7 days a week between 2 jobs for a month

  • My mom moved away to take care of a family member so I took over the household and became "man of the house" as it were

  • Dyed my hair back to my root colour and trimmed it

  • Ontario went grey (total lockdown) on Christmas Eve (no more work for meee)

  • Did an online (zoom) escape room with my mom, sister, and three of my closest friends

  • Had Christmas at my dad's with my sister <3

*This is a list to remind me of all the things I did and could do despite everything being restricted and closed and travel being basically illegal. I was supposed to go on a cruise in the spring (2 weeks after we went into lockdown in Canada!). And to three concerts. And a bachelorette party & wedding. And to see family in London or Halifax for Christmas. And have two friends visit from outside the country. And I have plans to go to Colorado next spring and that probably won't happen. And I was going to go to BC in January, not happening.

I'm posting this before Christmas and New Year's Eve but I'm sure Christmas went well and also that I did nothing for New Year's like always, but I'm definitely going to make sure that I watch it live somewhere to see wtf they do this year. Covid doesn't want us to drop the ball to end the year but we must. It's like the ending of Mario Bros. levels, we gotta jump on that flagpole (how many innuendos do u see here lol) or it never ends.

Be nice to yourself and to others. Set goals for yourself next year (general ones that aren't tied down as resolutions). Plan staycations. Be your own town's local tourist. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Wear a fucking mask. Manifest better vibes.

xx
