6 Things I Find Comforting

tldr; i realized that no matter your age, you'll always need the things that comfort you

Ailish suggests a blog about comforting things
ailish back at it again!

What you find comforting is gonna depend on who you are as a person. Some people think coffee is comforting. Or red wine. Couldn't be me... yuck. Ailish, my dood, this is not weird at all. I think this is such a relevant topic that I'm upset I didn't come up with it myself! Whether you need extra comfort because of the current happenings of the world (pandemic or political related), or seasonal depression, or a breakup, or your favourite show of 17 years has ended (Grey's...almost), or you're in mourning or just feel icky because of winter... This one's for you! Get hygge with it ;)

  1. FOOD & drink. This list couldn't exist without the mention of food, but I'll also throw drinks into it:

    1. I love all the savoury foods a girl can get her hands on, and it doesn't matter what time of the month it is (shut up). BREAD. Stews and soups, pot pies, anything with gravy, *poutine*, chocolate, sundaes, brownies, cake, cookies (all the desserts)...

    2. I really love a good, creamy hot chocolate (I've been experimenting with using a splash of vanilla, and using almond milk because my body hates actual milk - life changing. You must also try crushing up candy canes to make it pepperminty!). Chocolate milk, root beer float, kahlua (especially the peppermint one), rosé & white wine, sangria, smoothies...

  2. My bed. If I could, I would sleep and/or lay in bed all hours of the day. I have in the past, and I've never once regretted it. Massive and cozy blankets, a warm scented candle in the corner, cuddled up with a hot chocolate or watching a movie. I have lil twinkle lights all over my room to keep a soft light on when I'm just chillin out, maxin and relaxin all cool (you'd have seen if you follow me on insta). Bringing snacks into bed is a great pastime of mine.

  3. Clothes! Duh. Most people won't be comfy in their business casual attire or in their skinny jeans and nice shirt... I used to enjoy jeans so much that I'd be able to sleep in them but then I grew up and hated wearing jeans (though I still love the look so I'm torn). Especially with current events, you'll find me in my baggiest sweats or my stretchiest leggings and every form of a cozy sweater or loose shirt and most likely in a sports bra, or no bra if I can help it, 100% of the time. I put on jeans for that one instagram photo I took on Boxing Day but that was it, and they're not actual denim, super stretchy and great so they got a pass. Baggy, loose, stretchy, soft clothing is the light of my life. My purpose for living, almost. ;)

  4. PETS. I wouldn't be a functioning human being without some form of a pet to play and cuddle with and talk to without a response. We all know pets are better company than actual people, especially for us single folks. My entire life (save for the first 3 years of my life and the 5 years I lived in Colorado) I've had pets (99% have been cats, but I've had fish and a dog and a hamster at different times). There's no secret I'm a cat person through and through. I like dogs enough, but I'm SO allergic and I don't have Dog Energy. I'm a big Cat Energy lady, aka lazing around the house until someone feeds me. There's something so special about your cat choosing to finally lay at your feet or knead your blanket or rub up on your leg in passing, but even better when they come cuddle with you even when food isn't an end result. Rare, but it's the BEST feeling. Speaking of animals cuddling, if you're like me you still have some stuffed animals laying around from when you were growing up. Those make really good cuddle buddies too for us singletons.

  5. Tanning (in the actual sun). Even if it's 2 billion degrees outside (that's hot in celsius AND fahrenheit) it feels so good when the sun hits your skin. It's my favourite thing about being outside. The air can be hot and musty and humid and gross but the warmth of the sun is still 100% the best. I think it hits differently than being warm in other means because if you live in a normal place with seasons, you probably can only go outside to tan a couple of months out of the year. This goes hand in hand with being at the beach or at a pool! Being sticky and hot and gross and jumping into an otherwise cold body of water can be SO refreshing, and if it's hot enough the water will be warm which is even nicer. I fucking love summer.

  6. Petrichor. The smell of the rain. It's so earthy and clean and nice. You know the exact smell I'm talking about - can you smell it right now? Mmmmmm. Also comforting is the rain hitting the window (but not in a full out storm bc sometimes it can be hella annoying). Speaking of, I found this youtube channel called Nemo's Dreamscapes that only uploads long audios (I'm talking over 2 hours) of rain or a fire crackling in the background while some old records or the radio plays really quietly... it's supposed to help you sleep but honestly it's good for everything. I love all of them. Sometimes the sounds play live too which is fun.

I can think of a few more things like friends and family, laughing, a good perfume or cologne, waking up from a really good dream... But this list would be forever long. I'd LOVE to know what you find comforting. Hit up my DMs!
